Lemon tree
Lemon tree (Citrus limon, Rutaceae)
Ibicencan: llimoner (fruit: llimona)
French: citronnier (fruit: citron)
The lemon tree is native to South East Asia and is grown in the Mediterranean area, including Ibiza.
Lemons, for their high content in vitamin C, are appreciated as a remedy against colds and influenza. They also served sailors against scurvy. The skin (choose fruits without pesticides!) helps in case of lack of appetite.
The leaves have sedative effects. A tea of them is used against nervousness, insomnia, spasms, migraine and asthma.
Lemon juice provides the body with vitamin C which is resorbed better than from many other sources. It even eases the dissolution of kidney stones. When drinking lemon juice, avoid contact with the teeth as far as possible as the acid is aggressive to them.
It is often said that lemons (unlike oranges) after metabolisation are alkaline. So far no one has ever managed to tell me the chemical formula. Therefore I remain skeptical.
