Phoenician Juniper
Phoenician juniper (Juniperus phoenicea, Cupressaceae)
Ibicencan: savina
French: genévrier de Phénicie
The Phoenician juniper, also known by its Spanish name as sabina, is very frequent on the Pityuse Islands and is considered a holy tree. Formentera's port place is even named after it as La Savina.
The cones (commonly known as "berries", in Ibicencan called savinons) may not be eaten like those of many other juniper species because they are poisonous.
A traditional use of this juniper s in case of rheuma. From trees that do not make cones (commonly called males) twigs are taken, these are dried over embers. Then they are put on the aching part of the body.
