Peppermint

Peppermint (Mentha piperita, Lamiaceae)

French: menthe poivrée

Swedish: pepparmynta

This mint species is not found in the wild anywhere, it is an infertile hybrid. In gardens, however, it is rather common, alongside with other mint species (like the spearmint). The mint used most in Spain is this one, even though the trade name "poleo-menta" creates the idea that it is the poisonous pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium, Spanish poleo), which is found on the Peninsula as well as on Mallorca and Menorca, yet not on the Pityuses.

The mint has an invigorating effect. The infusion is a remedy for head ache and migrane. The essential oil is said to be effective against the hepatitis virus. In case of inflammations in the mouth it is good to chew peppermint leaves.

Attention: Different sources hold it unadvisable to take mint over a prolonged period of time, which is said to have negative effects.
