Pinnatifid Poppy
Pinnatífid poppy (Papaver pinnatifidum, Papaveraceae)
Ibicencan for the gender: rosella
On Ibiza there are several species of poppy with red flowers. Theoretically their seeds could be in the same way as those of the opium poppy, sold as "poppy", although they are smaller and have no traditional use.
As a sedative the different poppies, including the corn poppy (field poppy, the common "red poppy", Papaver rhoes), are by far not as dangerous as the opium. The plant contains alkaloids but not morphine.
The petals can be used as an ingredient for teas. These teas help against cough and hoarseness and serve as a sedative for children. For corn poppy 6-8 petals per cup are suggested, of species with smaller petals some more should be taken. For the same purpose the leaves can be eaten raw in salad.
A decoction from the immature capsules can serve as a sedative.
