Mastic

Mastic (Pistacia lentiscus, Anacardiaceae)

English also: mastic tree

Ibicencan and local Spanish: mata

French: pistachier lentisque

Swedish: mastixbuske

The mastic shrub is typical of the Ibicenco macchia, a close relative of the pistachio. A use of elsewhere, unknown on Ibiza is the following: The oil of the fruits is put in sweets and liqueurs. The resin is healthy for the gums. In order to reduce inflammations of the gums decoctions of the leaves and trunks are used, also with the fruits.

On Ibiza water in which mastic fruits and leaves have been boiled, is used to rinse the mouth against mouth inflammations.
