Almond tree

Almond tree (Prunus dulcis = Amygdalus communis, Rosaceae)

Ibicencan: ametller, metller (seed: ametlla, metlla)

French: amandier

Swedish: mandel

The almond tree was introduced into the Balearic Islands, it bears dryness.

Frequent consumption of almond seeds is prophylactic against heart and blood circulation diseases. The Ibicenco almond seeds are rarely used for lack of a cracking-machine, that's why the almonds eaten on Ibiza are bought from the Peninsula. It is recommendable to change this habit in order to make better use of the potential this island has to offer. In passed times on Ibiza the ashes of burnt almond shells was used to bleach clothes, what was in favour of the use of the almonds.
