Common Sage

Common sage (Salvia officinalis, Lamiaceae)

French: sauge officinale

Swedish: kryddsalvia

This sage is cultivated on Ibiza and is not found wild on this island. It brings much more yield than the native species Salvia verbenaca, and it needs more water.

Sage tea is used for menstruation problems and low blood pressure. Like other bitter plants, sage supports digestion. A sage tea before sleeping is recommended for a calm sleep.

Sage decoctions used externally have astringent effects and thus are used against gingivitis, abscesses and insect bites. Sage is a good ingredient for toothpastes.

The smoke of sage is used against a cold, either in the form of incense or a cigarette or in a pipe.
