Common Thyme
Common Thyme (Thymus vulgaris, Lamiaceae)
Ibicencan: frígola
French: thym commun
Swedish: kryddtimjan
Common thyme on Ibiza is only found in the subspecies aestivus, which is absent on the other Balearic Islands. It is not frequent and is often found together with its more abundant close relatives, the thyme species Thymbra capitata y Micromeria inodora, the first of which can be used instead.
Thyme tea is used as a remedy for cough. In case of throat problems gargles are made with a concentrated tea. Moreover, thyme stimulates the immune system by increasing the production of leucocytes. As a spice as well as tea it supports the digestion.
There are several Thymus and Thymbra species on Ibiza (and in addition the similar species, confusion of which does not cause problems. On the Peninsula it is the species most used.
