Headed Thyme

Headed thyme (Thymbra capitata = Thymus capitatus; Lamiaceae)

Ibicencan: frígola vera, frígola de Sant Joan

This thyme species is rather frequent in the rosemary communities on Ibiza and the other Balearic Islands.

In the Pityuses this plant has some traditional uses. Leaves and flowers are boiled to achieve aigua de frígola, which serves against stomach aches. For this latter use it was traditionally collected on Saint John's day, from which habit it received its Catalan name. Other uses are the same as those of the less frequent common thyme, for example as a spice and for digestion.
