Nasturtium

Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus; Tropaeolaceae)

The nasturtium is of South American origine and was introduced to Europe as an ornamental plant. It is common in gardens, also on Ibiza, partly naturalized. It can easily be recognized by its round leaves with the stalk attached in the centre. The flowers have five orange petals, sometimes more yellow, sometimes more red.

The nasturtium contains antibiotics, and till today there is no resistence in pathogens known, so it does not have the risks of other antibiotics. Moreover it contains vitamine C.

Leaves and flowers are eaten in salads. The flower buds are put in vinagre and after some time are eaten like capers.

The plant is efficient against infections of the urinary and breathing system. And it serves to increase the immune system.
